A 79+ in PTE Academic (roughly equal to an IELTS 8.0) is the benchmark many universities and migration programs look for. It's demanding — but because PTE is computer-scored, it rewards clear strategy, fluency and accuracy far more than luck. Here's how to get there, section by section.
What skills do you need to score 79+?
PTE measures four core skills — Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening — but reaching 79+ depends on a few practical abilities underneath them. The good news: every one of these is trainable.
- Speaking fluency & pronunciation — clear, steady, natural speech (the machine scores flow and clarity, not your accent).
- Listening & note-taking — catching detail accurately and jotting keywords fast.
- Reading speed with strong grammar & vocabulary — good collocations make the fill-in-the-blanks tasks easy.
- Writing structure & accuracy — clean, correct sentences built on a reliable template.
- Typing speed — PTE is computer-based, so comfortable typing saves precious time in Writing and Listening.
- Time management & focus — staying calm and on-pace across a roughly two-hour test.
At CILL we build these skills step by step, then sharpen them under exam conditions with unlimited mock tests — which is how students move from a good score to a great one.
1. Understand how PTE scoring really works
PTE uses integrated scoring — most tasks contribute to more than one skill. For example, Read Aloud feeds both Speaking and Reading, and Write from Dictation feeds Listening and Writing. That means a handful of high-value tasks can lift several scores at once. Master those first.
2. Speaking — fluency and pronunciation win
- Never stop or hesitate. The machine scores fluency heavily — speak at a steady, natural pace without long pauses or restarts.
- Read Aloud: keep rhythm and clear pronunciation; don't sacrifice flow chasing every word.
- Repeat Sentence: train your memory in chunks, and say what you remember confidently — partial + fluent beats hesitant + complete.
- Describe Image / Retell Lecture: use a practised template so you start instantly and never go silent.
3. Writing — structure and grammar
- Summarize Written Text: answer in one grammatically correct sentence (5–75 words) — combine the main points with linking words.
- Essay: follow a clean structure — introduction, two body paragraphs, conclusion (200–300 words). A reliable template keeps grammar and coherence high.
- Accuracy matters more than fancy vocabulary. Clear, correct sentences score best.
4. Reading — manage time and master the blanks
- The Fill in the Blanks tasks carry the most weight — build your collocations and grammar so the right word feels obvious.
- Re-order Paragraphs: find the topic sentence first, then follow the logical links.
- Watch the clock — Reading is timed as a section, so don't get stuck on one question.
5. Listening — Write from Dictation is gold
- Write from Dictation is one of the highest-value tasks in the whole test — practise it daily until you can capture full sentences accurately.
- Summarize Spoken Text: take quick notes of keywords, then write a tight 50–70 word summary.
- Use the audio time wisely — note-taking shorthand makes a big difference.
6. Practise with real mock tests
Strategy only sticks under exam pressure. The students who reach 79+ are the ones who do repeated, scored mock tests and review every mistake. At CILL, every course includes unlimited mock assessment with personal feedback from Syed Wasi — plus our practice app for daily drilling.
Common mistakes that keep students under 79
- Pausing or restarting in Speaking (kills fluency).
- Over-writing the Summarize tasks or breaking the word limits.
- Ignoring Write from Dictation and Read Aloud — the highest-value tasks.
- Practising without scored mocks, so weak areas never get fixed.
Frequently asked questions
Is 79+ hard to get in PTE?
It's demanding but very achievable with the right strategy and consistent practice. Because PTE is computer-scored, it rewards clear templates, fluency and accuracy — which can be trained systematically, as we do at CILL.
Which PTE section is most important for a high score?
PTE uses integrated scoring, so most tasks affect more than one skill. Speaking and the writing tasks carry a lot of weight, and high-value items like Write from Dictation, Read Aloud and Repeat Sentence can lift several scores at once. We prioritise these in training.
How long does it take to reach 79+?
With a solid English base, many students reach 79+ within about two months of focused preparation plus unlimited mock tests. Those who need to strengthen their English first can take longer — our Full Membership course supports that at your own pace.
Do templates really help?
Yes — for Describe Image, Retell Lecture, Summarize Written Text and Essay, well-practised templates save time and keep your structure and grammar clean, which directly improves your score. We teach exam-tested templates for every task type.
