Both PTE Academic and IELTS are world-recognised English tests accepted for university admission and skilled migration. Format & scoring
PTE is taken entirely on a computer and scored by AI, which makes results fast and highly consistent. IELTS uses human examiners for the Writing and Speaking sections, with a band score from 1 to 9. Because PTE's scoring is automated, it rewards a clear, repeatable approach — exactly what good coaching can train.
The speaking test — the biggest difference
This is where most students feel the difference. In PTE, you speak into a microphone and the computer scores your fluency and pronunciation — no human nerves, no interviewer. In IELTS, you sit a face-to-face interview with an examiner. If interviews make you anxious, PTE often feels more comfortable; if you thrive in conversation, IELTS may suit you.
Results speed
If you're on a tight deadline for a visa or admission, PTE's ~48-hour turnaround can be a real advantage over IELTS's longer wait.
Acceptance for study & migration
Both tests are widely accepted by the governments of Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Canada and by thousands of universities for study and skilled migration. Always confirm which test — and which version — your specific university or visa category requires before you book.
